So after a long weekend of not-so-great eats, I always like to really follow my hunger cues for a couple days to get back on track.  That meant today I only ate 939 calories worth of food, when I should be eating 1200.  I’m OK with that.  This weekend I likely had days where I ate 2500+ calories, so I’m not going to die from a couple of lower-calorie days.  And I’m honestly not hungry all day either.  Anyway, today (and maybe tomorrow) will be a couple of those lighter eating days after a few days of heavier eating!

Food i 8 today:

  • protein shake –> 1 C spinach, 1 C almond milk, 1 TBSP sunbutter, 1 scoop Sun Warrior chocolate protein powder, 1/2 banana
  • 3 oz broccoli + 2 TBSP hummus
  • 1 oz vegetable chips
  • Green Giant brussels sprouts in butter sauce (entire package)
  • dessert shake –> 1 C spinach, 1 C almond milk, 1/2 banana, 1 TBSP cocoa powder, 1 C blueberries

oh buffet…why do you tempt me?

Workout:  hour long hike

Another long, full, and fun day in Tennessee!  We went hiking, explored some waterfalls, ate at a Chinese buffet, saw Fast and Furious 6, walked around the downtown area, and then got a delicious, home-cooked meal from my sister-in-law.  I’m wiped out, and I didn’t take any pics again, so here’s the list of all i 8 today.  I wasn’t on my best behavior, but I’m not feeling overly stuffed right now, which is progress.

Food i 8 today:

  • Free hoetl breakfast buffet –> bites of my husband’s Belgian waffle; about half of a blueberry muffin
  • Chinese buffet –> plate of veggies (stir-fried with teriyaki sauce), 2 pieces of an avocado sushi roll, 1/2 a dinner roll, bites of this and that dessert
  • Dinner –> veggie burger over a bed of lettuce with ranch dressing, grilled onions and peppers, a few bites of macaroni salad
  • a delightful strawberry cobbler

Today I worked and worked at the computer and then realized I needed to break for some food!  I’ve been meaning to check out a local Orlando vegan joint, Dandelion Communitea Cafe, for lunch one of these days, so I went for it today.

I opted for the Polynesian Banana Fantasy which is a combo of bananas, carrots, celery, cucumber, walnuts, raisins, and coconut flakes that you can have wrapped up in a whole-wheat tortilla, mixed with quinoa in a bowl, or mixed with spring mix in a bowl.  I opted for the salad style.  They gave me sides of both a curry dressing and a guac of sorts that they call “whirled peas” guacamole because it’s made from pureed peas.  In a nutshell:  It. was. awesome!  Everything combined perfectly.   Yum!

An hour or two later I had a MAJOR craving for an indulgent, heavy, terrible-for-me dessert.  So I stopped at a local bakery called Sister Honey’s and went to town.

I ordered this four-layer coconut cake and my-oh-my was it sweet!  I could only manage to eat the cake part and the custard layers.  The icing was just tooooo rich for me to finish.

It sure did hit the spot!

Then, since I ruined my “good eating” with that dang slice of cake, I just continued with the junk food for dinner.  We went to a burrito joint and I just munched on these.

And of course, as if this wasn’t enough, I went ahead and got a vanilla ice cream cone from Chick Fil A on the way home.  SO bad today!

Ya know, I think not working out puts me in a funk where I just care less about eating right.  On top of that, I know that I am going back to my apartment this weekend and will start teaching a summer course on Monday.   I’ll get back into my routine with exercising regularly and eating clean, so I’m just “living it up” until then.

Today I woke up, did some work, then headed out to our fave Orlando BBQ joint (4 Rivers Smokehouse) for lunch with the hubs!

I went with my usual–a side of fire roasted corn and a side of bread pudding.  SO DARN GOOD!  I ate only half at the restaurant since we ate around 11am, and I wasn’t particularly hungry yet.  I ate the other half later in the afternoon.

On the way home from lunch, I stopped by my favorite Orlando spot for vegan and gluten-free desserts–Drunken Monkey.  I’ve been addicted to their Anzac biscuits for a while, but I decided I wanted to switch it up and try something new.  I could NOT decide on just one item, so naturally I went with three.

(1) a vegan and gluten-free chocolate chip cookie bar, (2) a small gluten-free double chocolate cookie, and (3) a small gluten-free chocolate chip cookie.

After I ate the rest of my BBQ sides this afternoon, I decided to do a little taste test and commit myself to NOT polishing off all three, especially if they didn’t taste good.  The result:  the cookies were not so great, so I trashed both of them.  The cookie bar was delish, so I saved the rest for my after-dinner snack.  Perfecto!

Dinner was a Chipotle salad.

I really didn’t need to eat all of this, but I did!  My belly is FULL and happy now!

Ok, so I hopped on the scale this morning and was annoyed with the number I saw.  Damn scale!  I know the only person to blame is myself…

Anyway, I had a pizza night with friends scheduled for this evening, so I decided to do a mini half-day cleanse prior to dinner.  I drank TONS of water and had this bottle of kombucha.

The rest of the evening consisted of two slices of pineapple pizza and a Publix M&M’s chocolate chip cookie.

the importance of a banana

Workout:  35-minute jog/walk

I tested out how my foot was feeling with a short jog/walk this morning.  The result:  it’s not feeling 100% better, but it doesn’t exactly hurt.  I can just still sort of feel where the injury was.  We’ll see how things go from here and then I’ll reassess.

I had my post-workout shake, which always includes 5 key ingredients (spinach, almond milk, sunbutter, protein powder, and banana).  Today I didn’t have a banana.  I figured it shouldn’t taste thaaaat different, so I still made the shake.

How did it taste?  Let’s just say I learned an important lesson today–the banana is essential.  It didn’t taste AWFUL, but it definitely wasn’t good.  I never would’ve thought that just 1/2 a banana could add so much to the shake!  Lesson learned.

I was still a bit hungry after the shake, so I cut up 1/2 a cucumber and ate it with hummus.  Lovin’ this hummus flavor!

I kept it light during the day because I knew we were going to my FAVORITE buffet spot (Sweet Tomatoes) for an early dinner tonight.  Love this place!  I tried to “taste” more things, instead of eating all of everything.  I can never choose between all the delicious options, so this allowed me to try more items.  Alright, here are each of my plates:

This morning I drank A LOT of water to try to clean out all that bad food from yesterday!  I started off with my protein shake, a couple spoonfuls of the leftover corn from yesterday, and a couple bites of my leftover cookie before I tossed the rest.

Then I drove down to my parents’ place for the weekend–woohoo!  I’m going to see my niece play in a volleyball tournament tomorrow, and it’s my sister’s birthday tomorrow, too, so we’re having a party at night.

Right when I got to my parents’ I had a little cheese and crackers appetizer with my dad that really filled me up.  So for dinner, I just snacked on some veggies.

But don’t worry, there was plenty of post-dinner taste-testing in the kitchen, as I munched on Easter candy and some baked treats that I whipped up for tomorrow’s celebration!  (ahem…these are not “from scratch” baked goods…let’s just say they’re semi-homemade hehe).

Today started with some more pre-workout veggies and hummus, followed by Body Pump (just like yesterday). and a protein shake.  I ran out of spinach, so I subbed in 1/2 a cucumber instead.  It definitely lost some of the green coloring…

As for the title of this post (Et Tu, Tempeh?)…that was the name of today’s special at our local vegan restaurant.  They post their specials on Facebook daily, and today’s sounded right up my alley:  Big salad with lettuce, sunflower sprouts, tomato, cucumber, red onion, carrot, croutons, & tempeh topped with house made ceasar dressing w/local garlic.  I ordered one to-go.

It was amaze-balls.  That homemade dressing had quite the garlic kick!  I only needed one of the side cups of it.  After taking the picture, I also decided to pick out all of the croutons.  Why would I skip out on such delicious empty carbs, you ask?  Why, to fill my belly with a different type of tasty, empty carb.

Yep…I had a big ol’ vegan peanut butter oatmeal cookie for dessert.  Just call me the cookie monster.  🙂

I filled the rest of the day with some more veggies and hummus, another shake, and some leftover chili.  Happy eating, people!

I woke up today feeling blah from all the bad eats yesterday… and I’m going to bed today feeling blah from today’s bad eats!  Today my friend had a crawfish boil.  He’s from Louisiana and wanted to bring a taste of home to us here in Florida.

While I did not partake in any crawfish-eating (nor the veggies thrown in with the crawfish), I did chow down on some spinach dip and crackers, mac & cheese, and dessert.  So yeah, the only veggie I had today was the measly spinach that shows up in the processed spinach dip I ate at the party.

I think all my bad food choices today and yesterday have to do with my hiatus from the gym/routine.  I just got home from an   extended (two-week) spring break.  While I was actually quite “good” eating-wise during my time away, I know these are the final couple of days before I go back to my healthy eating, so I just kind of let myself go.  I know the extra pounds will come off.  But it doesn’t feel too good right now!

ANZAC biscuits

It was a bit too cold for me to go for my walk outside today (READ:  60 degrees is too cold for me, I’m such a baby!), so I started today with some work on my laptop while snacking on carrots and guac hummus.

For dinner tonight, we bought a groupon for a local pizza joint called Pizza Xtreme.  The place had good reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon, so we went with it.  I ordered a personal 10″ cheese pizza with pineapple and ate 4 out of the 6 slices.

It was pretty darn good, but not the BEST pizza I’ve ever had.

For dessert, it was back to Drunken Monkey for one of their delicious, vegan ANZAC cookies.  Here’s a little blurb (source) about these “biscuits”:

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and the biscuit of the same name was popularized in Australia during World War I, presumably because simple ingredients like rolled oats, flour and desiccated coconut could stay relatively tasty after a long transit.
